Job Title: Chairperson – Parole Board

Job Description:
As a Chairperson within the Department of Correctional Services, you will play a pivotal role in assessing the potential release of offenders. This will involve reviewing both electronic and paper documents, analyzing evidence presented at oral hearings, and making informed decisions on whether offenders pose any continuing risk to the community. You will collaborate with other Parole Board members, applying your expertise to evaluate offenders’ cases and determine if release conditions should be applied.
In this leadership position, you will preside over hearings, critically assess risks, and work to ensure that decisions are based on a thorough and objective review of all available evidence. Your decisions will directly impact public safety and offender rehabilitation.
Key Responsibilities:
- Analyze and evaluate complex information from multiple sources, including documents and oral testimony, to assess the potential risk or dangerousness of offenders.
- Collaborate with Parole Board members to make informed, evidence-based decisions regarding offender release.
- Oversee parole hearings, ensuring that all relevant factors are considered in a structured and concise manner.
- Provide clear summaries and justifications for decisions or recommendations regarding offender release.
- Ensure that release conditions are appropriate to mitigate any identified risks.
Qualifications:
- A recognized NQF Level 7 qualification in Criminal Justice, Social Sciences, or a related field.
- Minimum of 5 years’ experience in a management or decision-making role.
- Proven experience in evidence-based decision-making, including the ability to analyze large volumes of complex information within tight deadlines.
- Demonstrable skills in evaluating facts and identifying key issues in complex offender cases.
