The Department of Water and Sanitation is seeking highly skilled and experienced Environmental Officers to join their team. As an Environmental Officer, you will be responsible for assessing the completeness of Water Use Licenses (WULAs) and conducting site inspections. You will also liaise with clients and other stakeholders to obtain outstanding information during WULA assessments, request scientific inputs within the Department using specified templates, and access and evaluate hydrological and environmental information regarding license applications.
You will assist in the development of policies and guidelines for the implementation of the National Water Act (NWA), 36 of 1998, regarding the water use sector. Your duties will also include finalizing assessments of information submitted by Water Use License Applicants and input from internal specialists, drafting records of recommendations (RoRs) and resultant decision documents, and drafting license conditions to control/mitigate the negative impacts of water uses. Additionally, you will assist in responding to queries from clients within and outside the department.
Qualifications
To be considered for this role, you must have a National Diploma in Environmental Management or Natural Science in one of the following fields: Agriculture, Agricultural, Forestry, Resource economics, Integrated Water Resource Management, Hydrology (Surface or Ground), Chemistry, Biochemistry, Microbiology, Water Utilization, Water Resource Engineering, and/or Geohydrology. You must also have a valid unexpired driver‘s license and at least two years of relevant experience in an area after obtaining the relevant qualification.
Your qualifications should also include sound knowledge of integrated water resource management and water resource protection, as well as knowledge and understanding of the water sector, including relevant legislation (NWA, CARA, and NEMA, MPRDA) and related policies, regulations, principles, guidelines, tools, and procedures. Excellent communication skills, including verbal, report writing, and presentation skills, are also essential. You should have sound interpersonal skills and the ability to work in a multidisciplinary team. Willingness to work abnormal hours and under pressure, as well as travel countrywide, is also required.
